 NEW WEEKLY FEATURE
The week of Jan. 9 - 15

NBA dominates Top 25 Cable Shows in black homes, but movies hold their own

(January 22, 2006) With the NFL season winding down, it's prime time for basketball to draw the attention of sports fans. According to Nielsen Media Research, NBA games and programming took the top three spot on the list of 25 most popular cable shows for black households during the second week of January.

Typically, movies dominate the list of cable programs viewed by black households, and 14 of the 25 for Jan 9-15 fall in this category. Sporting events, however, draw much larger audiences, with NFL games attracting 200,000 - 300,000 homes throughout the season. Black cable movie audiences usually average less than 100,000 households.

The overall winners for this week were BET and Turner, both of which had five shows on the top 25. Lifetime and USA followed with three each. The total number of black households watching the top 25 was 1.618 million.

Latest 'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life

As the American economy continues to move sluggishly, African-American households are curtailing their spending in many categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.

According to the newest edition of “The Buying Power of Black America” report, African-American households are tightening their belts when it comes to dining out, expanding their wardrobes, and leisure activities out of the home.
