'Essence' associate publisher Barbara
Britton resigns to start marketing firm
(January 19, 2006) Barbara Britton, vice president and associate
publisher, sales of Essence magazine is resigning after a 17-year tenure
with the publication to head her own company.
Britton's new venture, which has not yet been named, will be a
multicultural marketing
firm that provides advice and insight on the African-American market.
She's not straying far from her Essence roots, however, as the magazine will be her
first client. In fact, she'll continue to be listed on the masthead as
Publishing Advisor.
"I’m talking about being a
consultant and strategist to corporations," Britton told Target Market
News, "helping them to develop programs to make that connection with this
market."
Part of what Britton will be doing for Essence is being an advocate and an
ambassador for the value of the African-American market.
After all these years of sitting face-to-face with ad agency buyers and
account executives, she not talking about going head-to-head with them for new
business.
"I don’t expect to be a competitor to ad agencies. This is really about
strategic communications," she said. "I’ve developed a vast amount of
knowledge about how corporations can reach this market in impactful ways
and I’m bringing that together as a strategist."
Britton has more than 25 years of media experience from positions in
print, cable and television. During her assent at Essence she guided the
company to more than $150 million in annual revenues. She says she's
looking forward to adding the title entrepreneur to her resume and list of
accomplishments.
“I’m proud that I have established more value for African-American
consumers, and that goes beyond advertising. I’m proud to have developed
some really good sales and marketing professionals that are going to
continue to help corporations translate programs to make that connection
with this market.”
A successor has not been named, and for now Essence president, Michelle Ebanks,
will assume Britton's responsibilities.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
According to the newest edition of “The Buying Power of Black America”
report, African-American households are tightening their belts when it
comes to dining out, expanding their wardrobes, and leisure activities out
of the home. At the same time, they are increasing their spending on home
repairs and remodeling, audio and...
