Football season goes down kicking
with AFC playoff game taking top spot
(January
18, 2006) As the pro football season moves towards a Super Bowl, fans are
glued to the few remaining games. The match-up between the New England
Patriots and the Denver Broncos was the weekend's only divisional game to
make the list of top ten shows in black households, according to Nielsen.
The game’s time slot – primetime on Saturday night – probably helped boost
ratings. The CBS game was the only show to attract two million homes, and
matched nicely with the network’s second place finisher and only other
winner, “CSI Miami.”
ABC tied with UPN for the number of shows that made the list at four each,
with “Wife Swap” (which featured a black family on its Jan 9th
episode) making a rare top ten showing. The overall number of black
households watching the top ten dropped by 11 percent from the previous
week’s total of 20 million to 17.9 million.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
According to the newest edition of “The Buying Power of Black America”
report, African-American households are tightening their belts when it
comes to dining out, expanding their wardrobes, and leisure activities out
