'Heart & Soul' starts '06 by doubling ad
pages, expanding distribution
(January
16, 2006) "Heart & Soul," the health and fitness magazine for African
American women announced today that it acquired returning advertisers Ford
Explorer, Verizon, American Family Insurance and several others for its
February/March, issue doubling the number of ad pages in its 2005 Reunion
Issue released last Fall.
“We are excited by the momentum that has been gathering behind 'Heart &
Soul' since our re-launch,” stated Edwin V. Avent, president and publisher
of the title.
The publication was
purchased at auction in 2004 by Avent's Baltimore-based Twenty-First
Century Group when former publisher, Vanguarde Media, went bankrupt.
“The advertising community, subscribers and retailers have embraced our
return. Since our debut we have received thousands of new subscribers and
secured the authorizations to return to thousands of newsstands
nationwide.”
Among the chains that will be selling the upcoming February/March issue,
that features a cover story on Malinda Williams, the actress who played
Bird on the hit Showtime series, “Soulfood,” are Barnes and Noble,
Books-A-Million, Safeway and Wal-Mart among many others.
“We are really looking forward to building on our rate base of 300,000
readers during 2006 and we have developed some really exciting programs
this year for our readers and advertisers to help us do that” says Avent.
The February/March issue’s theme is “Joy” and features several articles
that encourage readers to find “joy” in everything from exercise and diet
to vacationing and having hotter sex!
The February/March issue goes on sale January 24th.

'Buying Power' report shows black consumers spending more on home life
As the American economy continues to move sluggishly,
African-American households are curtailing their spending in many
categories, including food, clothing and basic household items, while
investing more in home repair, home entertainment and consumer
electronics. Although they are trimming back, black consumers are still
spending more than their white counterparts on most of these products.
According to the newest edition of “The Buying Power of Black America”
report, African-American households are tightening their belts when it
comes to dining out, expanding their wardrobes, and leisure activities out
of the home. At the same time, they are increasing their spending on home
