ESPN smothers the cable competition with wall-to-wall college and pro football

(January 10, 2013) The college football bowls that kicked off the new year gave ESPN a good start to 2013. Black households were attracted by the millions to the games and, along with the cable channel's NBA coverage, ensured a winning week.

ESPN easily captured the most watched cable network title for the first week of January, with 12.6 million viewers across 11 games. Disney was second with 3.3 million for three shows, while USA took third place with 2.1 million across three shows.

Sports programming pushed the total of viewers for the Top 25 cables shows by 15 percent over the previous week, according to Nielsen, to 26.9 million.
